Back in January, Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony presented a two-week Beethoven and Bates Festival. Beyond the catchy alliteration, it intriguingly -- and somewhat schizophrenically -- slammed together Beethoven's 19th-century world with Mason Bates' 21st-century trip-hop world .
